Artist's Inspiration
The massive marble doorway, the jewel of Naxos. The Portara stands proudly on the islet Platia and has a way of captivating your imagination. In mythology, this is where Theseus abandoned princess Ariadne (my wife’s Greek name) after he killed the Minotaur in Crete. We spent a week exploring Naxos and enjoying its golden, sandy beaches. I sketched at the ancient Temple of Demeter.
It was a marvelous sight as the sun dove into the sea in the background of the Portara. The only piece left standing from the ancient Temple of Apollo. Here is a haiku I wrote to go along with this painting: “Marble, Eighty-ton ancient gate - Stands forever.”
